Snack Size Hitch Takes 2nd Place at the HBC Clear Lake

I had a pleasant surprise yesterday as I got an e-mail from Bob Cepek. Bob had just fished the HBC at Clear Lake and came in 2nd place. Well he went on to tell me the good news. Bob had picked up a new Snack Size Hitch in Lakeport and decided to use it during the tournament.

As he described it He brought the bait up on stage and Bryron Velvick took it from him, I guess a discussion went on as to who was going to keep the bait. Bob just barely got it back.

Byron asked Bob how many casts it took to catch the fish. He explained to him about twenty but did not tell Byron that he was just getting used to it for the first 10 to 15.

I don’t know how I missed all of this I must have been in la la land somewhere talking swimbaits with someone down on the dock.

The sad part is that Bob told me he missed a fish that he thinks would have won the thing.
Congratulations Bob on your 2nd place finish and thank you for your support.

I had better get back to making baits, sounds like I may have a swarm of new orders soon.

Keep an eye out this week. My next article will be about crankin Clear Lake.

TackleTour Lure Preview of the Snack Size Swimbaits – Updated

005

Last night Cal from TackleTour posted a preview of the Snack Size Swimbaits.

For those of you who do not know of TackleTour, it is one of the most in-depth tackle and fishing review websites on the web.

They concentrate largely on the bass fishing industry, but also cover a lot of bay and delta related items as well.

I have had an overwhelming response due to the write up, so I figured I would go ahead and give more details on the bait:

The bait is currently available at the following locations

Jig-Monster.com

Monster Fishing Tackle at OutdoorProShop.com

Tackle It in Lakeport, California

Oroville Outdoors, Oroville Ca

Hi's Tackle Box in San Francisco (and online)

Coming soon to
USACProShop.com and BassTackleDepot.com

I am currently putting in 12 hour days so I do not fall behind on production. I will be putting together a website which will hopefully be up by the end of this week or for sure by next week.
This site will be updated over the next month to give the full rundown on the bait.

  • Where to get it
  • How to fish it best including video
  • Contact and company info
  • How the bait came to be, etc
  • Full line up of colors in production

The web address will be JSJBaits.com

Although the full company name is JSJ Bait And Tackle, I wanted to have an easy to remember address.

For now, read the preview on TackleTour

As always – please let me know your feedback in the comments thread or email me

Snack Size Trout Takes 3rd at Won Bass Clear Lake Swimbait Tourney

DSC_0019

Our biggest of the day, just under six pounds

I fished the Won Bass swimbait only tourney with Steve Reed (the admin on Swimbaitnation) on Saturday and we took 3rd place.

We fished the Chartreuse shad Snack Size Trout wake bait all day and came in with 19.80 total. We must have had at least 20 fish come up and attack our baits. The bite was on fire.

The fish are hanging out on vertical offshore weed growth right now and are spreading out more and more each day. There was no real key spot so we had to just cover a ton of water in one huge cove on the north end.

NewsFlash: Snack Size Shad Wins on Clear Lake

This just in:

Posted on Swimbait Nation by Steve Reed and Tom Leogrande:

“Last night I fished the clear lake Anglers choice night tournament with Tom Leogrande, the former admin of this site. As we get to our first spot and we realize we lost our net on the ride over… woops

Tom started off the night with a couple frog fish on the tweety snag proof frog. We then saw some fish crashing bait on the surface and I decided to give the JSJ-Snack size trout a shot in the chartreuse color.

4th or 5th cast I’m on and its a good fish. Finally get the fish to the boat and since we have no net, Tom knows he has to lip it. With treble hooks all over he gives it the death grip we get it in the boat…. not quite 10, but close….

a while later hooked up again….fish feels bigger… oh crap! Bring it to the boat and its only 5-6 lbs but with a mouth full of weeds.

we end up culling out a small fish and weigh in with 23.96 and big fish of 9.88

PAYDAY…

lots of fun and a cool new bait by one of our own members.”

Congratulations Steve & Tom! Results are not even posted yet as of now: Anglers Choice

This is the best news I have had in a while!

New Snack Size Trout swimbait color

DSC_0007

I just got done spraying the first batch of chartreuse shad Snack size swimbaits, I spent a bit of time messing with base colors to get the pearl to read right after spraying it. I cannot wait to get my first fish on this color.

I will be out to Lake Sonoma with Tom Leogrande next week to get the first video of fish being caught on the bait (hopefully anyway) as well as some good video of the bait in action.

I am also organizing a trip with Cal from Tackletour.com to do an on the water introduction to the Snack size trout some time towards the end of the month.

The new chartreuse shad will be available by this weekend and Outdoor Pro Shop in Rohnert Park or on-line at Monster Tackle

Fishing the Snack Size Trout Swimbait

Thank you all who were on the waiting list for the Snack Size Trout swimbait. I have all of the baits shipped except for a few awaiting payment.

The next run of baits will be available at
Jig Monster Bass Tackle

As well as
Outdoor ProShop

I have had several people email me asking my favorite ways to fish the bait, so I figured I would do a post about it.

A little about the bait:
The Snack Size Trout comes in at 7″ exactly and weighs in at a little over 2 oz My idea behind this bait was to design a really versatile, light, midsized bait that could be fished in many different ways, not wear you out, and finally (and probably the most important for me) was that I really had tournament fishing in mind. Clear Lake, Delta, and Shasta specifically for myself – but really could be fished in place of a lot of baits that are already in your arsenal to help produce better fish just about anywhere.

Quality
I spared no money or effort on this bait – it has the best of everything I could find: glass eyes, Owner nickel plated hooks, carbon fiber hinge pin, all stainless slit rings and eyelets, replacement tails, and an automotive finish all pearl paint scheme. It also comes in a real numbered box, not just a throw away clam shell package.

After countless days behind this bait I have a number of ways I have learned to use it

The simple waking of the bait
This can be done by moderately to very fast reeling, straight in.
I recommend keeping the rod tip pretty low to the water and straight out in front of you for pretty much all applications. This specific application will create a very consistent V pattern behind the bait.

Rippin’ the bait
Yes this is only a 2oz bait and can be ripped all day long with the right set up. The biggest numbers of fish have come off this method for me. Rippin’ the bait will cause it to dive down to six inches to a foot or so and the erratic motion it produces gives the bass something they have not seen yet.

Dead sticking on points
Boring, yes, but if you have the patience, well worth it. I have only got a couple doing this so far, but the biggest fish cannot stand something just sitting there above them for so long. . and by “long”, I mean long up to a half hour or so.

Walking the bait
I have found that this bait can be used much like spook would be walked. Deadly! I cannot wait until summer on the Delta for this.

180 degree turns
This bait will turn to either side on a dime. Just a quick pop downward, give it some immediate slack and you can turn it left or right with some practice. Twitch your rod pretty hard to do this.

Jumping the bait
Sort of like a spook: Get the bait going pretty crazy with your wrist and with some practice can get this thing airborne like a scared baitfish or trout running from it predator.

Mix it up
By combining all or just a couple of these methods I can guarantee this is going to become one of your favorite top water baits

The set up
My favorite rod to fish this bait on is the Dobyns, Mike Long 795 ML 7′ 9″ paired with a Daiwa TDA for a small profile to help work the bait, this reel has a big spool for 20 pound line

I really hope those of you who purchase the Snack Size Trout enjoy this bait as much as I do.

Sneak Preview – Snack Size Swimbaits Prototype

Bait_teaser_pics_053

So after months of hard work there is finally light at the end of the tunnel. I am in the final stages of detail mold-making and finish testing on my new 7” three-piece hard swimbait. I am crafting these completely by hand at my shop in Novato, CA. There will be two types of floating wake baits as well as a sinking model. These things have incredible action. I will be going to Clear Lake this weekend to do some more testing. I’ll let you know how it goes.

If things keep going well they will be available in a couple months.
